How to Download External Videos Directly onto timeline

Only download videos you have permission to use — your own uploads, royalty-free content, or videos with a Creative Commons license.

1. Open the Downloader

In Trail, click the Downloader button on the timeline controls.

A panel opens directly inside the editor — no need to switch windows or leave the app. Paste your link and choose whether to trim or download the whole video.

Copy the URL of the video and paste it into the downloader.

Trail supports all major platforms:

  • YouTube
  • TikTok
  • Instagram
  • Twitter / X
  • Facebook
  • Vimeo
  • And more

3. Choose Quality and Download

Select your preferred quality and click Download.

Trail fetches the video and saves it directly into your project’s Media Bin — no file management needed.

💡 Tip: Always pick the highest resolution available. You can export at a lower quality later without losing anything.

4. Drag It onto the Timeline

The clip lands instantly in your Media Bin.

Drag it straight onto the timeline and start cutting. No trips to the downloads folder and no manual importing.

Everything in One Place

Most editors make you download a video separately, hunt for the file, then import it manually.

Trail cuts all of that out — the downloader and timeline live in the same window.
